Match Report : South Africa 0 vs 2 Spain - W +40

Our third game was against an evenly matched Spanish team. Seeded 8th & 9th in the section meant that, in theory, this was going to be the tightest pool match in the 40+ ladies competition...

Match Report : South Africa 6 vs 0 Belarus - W +40

Our second match was against a short staffed Belarus team at Club Deportiu Terrassa. We moved the ball around well, kept good possession and scored the first field goal within the first minute of the match. Another 3 goals were scored within the first 6 minutes.

Match Report : South Africa 0 vs 8 Australia - M +50

A sweltering hot afternoon in the scenic hills of Terrassa was the venue for the much anticipated game against Australia. We made a tentative start with the Aussies capitalising on our errors to score two goals in the first 10 minutes. Unfortunately, this set the tone for the rest of the game so we never settled down and played to our potential. The final score was 8 - 0 with no real opportunity for us to get onto the scoreboard. All credit to the Aussies for moving the ball around and good running into space. Marc received the SA man of the match award from the Aussies for being the SA player to see the most action. It was a sobering experience from which we as individuals and a team have learnt many lessons that will only benefit us in our next games. Our next and final pool game is against Ireland which is a must-win to make it into the quarter finals.

Match Report : South Africa 0 vs 1 USA - M +40

The USA. “Everyone likes to beat the USA”. It’s what the Aussies said to us from the side of field before the game. Truth be told that wasn’t our motivation. We saw them beat New Zealand in the dying minutes a few days earlier and we knew it would be tough, especially after our effort against the Aussies.

Ladies 40+ started the tournament with a shortened practice match against the Australian 35+ team on P2 at Egara. We were pleased to have held them to a 0-0 draw. It was a good start to get the ladies focused, get a bit of running into our legs and settle the nervous energy.

Match Report : South Africa 3 vs 2 Zimbabwe - M +50

Finally after 10 months of preparation and 5437 WhatsApp messages we played our first game against Zim. Preparation involved trials, training camps, dreaded beep tests, the occasional practices, whiteboard lessons and games. Craig Garrett showed off his sublime skills to score a field goal which he casually flicked passed the goalkeeper. Mike Jarvis scored from an amazing deflection, although there is a suspicion he was just trying to stop the ball. He is more than willing to give you a detailed description of the skillful maneuver and pose for selfies. Craig Garrett was in action again from a short corner to make it 3-0 after 15 minutes. At this stage we all had visions of winning by a large margin, however Zimbabwe showed their grit by coming back strong in the 2nd half and scoring 2 goals. They started improving during the game as their players live in Ozz, SA, Zim and England so this was their first game together as a team. Marc was man of the match for some diving saves in the…

Match Report : South Africa 3 vs 4 Australia - M +40

The game against the Aussies was highly anticipated even before the pool games were announced. Lance Maree’s chargers were up for this one. If not the reigning 40+ champs, they are a hockey nation of great pedigree. The game was played on a quicker pitch against quicker players, with more structure and no shortage of skill. A p-flick was conceded in the first quarter and Aussies went up 1-0. Not long after Mark Bredin latched onto a ball at pace near the 25, entered the D at pace from an acute angle and well … roofed it. A goal of the highest quality brought SA on level terms but the Aussies came back and by half-time the score was 4-1. The 40+ were not done. Dale Griffiths entered the D from the right flank and forced a save that deflected to Darren Olivier, whose close-range flick struck an Aussie defender, forcing a penalty flick that was coolly converted by Sean Mulligan. Late in the game Lance picked up the ball in the midfield and found Mark Bredin who clipped it past…
